Electric blankets start 5,000 fires/year in the UK

Electric blankets have always scared the hell out of me. I would never buy one or use one.

...Across the 13 authorities who took part in October and November, over 5,000 electric blankets were tested, and 40% of these were condemned as being unsafe with faults such as scorched fabric, exposed heating elements and damaged insulation.

Old or damaged blankets cause more than 5,000 fires a year. Research has shown that people are still using electric blankets that are ten years old (or older) in homes in Britain and are responsible for 99% of the fires caused by electric blankets. And each year 20 people are killed and 100 injured in such fires...
